Way to go, SUN!
WSJ reports:
::
Sun is announcing plans to offer cable operators and other telecommunications companies new hardware and software for delivering streams of video.
Sun co-founder Andy Bechtolsheim designed the system, which is being unveiled at the Tribeca Film Festival today in New York. The Sun Streaming System, as the company calls it, includes the Sun Fire x4500, which combines computing and data storage in a single product.
The company says the new system can deliver up to 160,000 simultaneous video streams — 10 times more than existing products on the market — at a price of $50 per stream.
The system would sell for upward of a million dollars.

How about a similar system at a lower price-performance point for those hundreds and thousands of newly launched, boutique internet-TV stations?

Leave it to a startup in the Amazon Web Services(AWS) ecosystem.
Sun Streaming System has more than X4500 aka Thumper (24TB). It has a streaming switch and 2-4 x4100 servers. Thumper is the storage piece of the whole solution. I have heard a lot of good things about EC2. Sun launched a startup essentials recently along with Joyent and Navisite. Check them out.
