Web 3.0 and Verticalization

Thursday, September 6, 2007 | 1 comment

I have worked with the Web 3.0 framework for months now, and taken a crack at defining how the web is likely to evolve in the future. So here’s a recap of the thesis so far. I will be adding a dimension to this framework shortly, so it is a good time to stop and take stock of what we have discussed so far in a synthesized format.

Definition:

* Web 3.0 = (4C + P + VS)
* Web 3.0 and the Semantic Web

Verticals:

My thesis on Web 3.0 centers around verticalization of the web around specific Contexts. Here are a series of verticals, analyzed based on the Web 3.0 framework.

* Personal Finance & Web 3.0
* Online Travel & Web 3.0
* Online Jobs & Web 3.0
* Web 3.0 & Photo Sharing
* Web 3.0 & Real Estate
* Web 3.0 and Online Music
* Women and Web 3.0
* Web 3.0 and Online Health
* Online Auto and Web 3.0
* Online Dating and Web 3.0
* Web 3.0 and Online Sports
* Web 3.0 and Online Movies

Companies:

* Yahoo’s Turnaround Strategy
* News Corp’s Vertical Posturing
* Facebook’s Monetization Strategy
* Monster’s Destiny
* Expedia: Buyback of Shares
* Pricing Priceline
* Shutterfly: Acquisition Target?
* ZipRealty+Zillow?
* Will Move Move Up?
* Blue Nile’s Remedy
* WebMD Has tremendous Growth Ahead
* Netflix Needs to Rethink Strategy

Interviews:

* Web 3.0 & Group Travel : Groople CEO Mike Stacy
* Job Search Engine Indeed CEO Paul Forster
* TheFind: Lifestyle Shopping
* Wize Up On What To Buy
* Retrevo’s Vipin Jain on Vertical Search

In the next piece, we are going to add to the framework another variable. Stay tuned.
