Saying NO to $1.6 Billion

Posted on Sunday, Oct 8th 2006

Saying NO to $1.6 Billion has its consequences. YouTube is being courted heavily. Tons of murmers in the blogosphere and even on WSJ, NYT, etc..

The question that YouTube needs to ask itself is whether it can possibly go at it alone?

50 Million users sharing and watching video – that is the basic business dynamic. None of these hyperactive community members is making money. Why not incentivize them to do so? Rather than producing and promoting their content randomly, and for free, they could do so for someone.

I just don’t think it is that difficult to monetize this community, and if the YouTube management team has not figured it out yet, they ought to sell.
