Media Troubles

Saturday, October 14, 2006 | No comments

I wrote Media Shuffles earlier this week. Here’s TechCrunch reporting on CNet’s troubles, because of the rise of Blogs.

Clearly, blogs have disrupted a lot of things in the old media world. Google’s newly acquired power in video sharing will, likely, also prove problematic for the incumbants.

I am hearing from myriad sources that the notable bloggers, who have so brilliantly disrupted old media, are also looking for leverage, as they experience growing pains.

Recently, a deal called PopSugar (a celebrity gossip site) got funded, with Brian Sugar as its founder CEO, by none other than Mike Moritz. Other top VCs had also put in term sheets, but lost the deal.

Rumor has it, that Michael Arrington tried to merge his TechCrunch site with PopSugar. Never mind that there is no synergy in the target segments, but Sugar’s technology platform is leveregeable, and it looks like Brian plans to roll-out other sites using it to create a next-generation iVillage of sorts targeting young women.

At any rate, it looks to me like TechCrunch is ready to get acquired by CNet!
