Built To Enjoy: Andrew Fox’s 100% Owned $30M ClubPlanet (Part 7)

SM: You did $30 million last year. What do you expect to do next year?

AF: We believe that revenue next year, based on what we already have coming in and a new deal we have, will easily surpass $45 million. If we keep having these 30%-plus increase years, then by 2013 we are going to be a $100 million-plus revenue company. I am pretty satisfied with that since this business started out as a hobby.

I come from a humble background. I don’t need 10,000 cars and two boats. I want to do something I love and laugh at the end of the day. There is not a lot of pressure in this business except to do something that I enjoy. I don’t know a lot of people who can say that. I am a very happy person. I feel very lucky.

The way I found out about HARO is that the owner, Peter, and I were at a speaking engagement together. After we were both done we sat and had a cup of coffee. We both talked about how we were really lucky. We both do something we really like and serve a purpose to a community. Every day more people sign on to my service and to his service. Rather than trying to sell the business and be stuck having to worry about expectations, we can have great, fun lives. There is nothing wrong with having a nice business with no investors to answer to. We answer to the consumers, and I am happy with that.

SM: Peter just sold his business, I am not sure if you heard that yet. He sold it to Vocus PR last week. I just sent him a congratulatory e-mail; he has done a good job with that business.

AF: Don’t be surprised if I sell my business, then! That is surprising, but I guess anything can happen.

SM: I am really happy to hear what you were saying because I think your business is different. It is a fun business. I would love to see you promote some different genres of music and art with some of the wealth you have created.

AF: I am going to talk to our head of content to see what we can do to support other genres of music that do not have a lot of outlets. I get very passionate about certain things, such that other obvious issues miss my radar. I am encouraged by your suggestion.

SM: It has been lovely talking with you. Congratulations on your success.
