Thought Leaders in Big Data: Interview with Matti Aksela, VP of Analytics at Comptel (Part 5)

Posted on Monday, May 13th 2013

Sramana Mitra: How mature is your learning model at this point?

Matti Aksela: In the sense that the extract was working on predictive analytics solutions for 10 years prior to being acquired. The first release of the social links product was in 2006 or 2007.

SM: So it has been working on real data for a while now?

MA: That is true. We were working on this and different phenomena as well. I have a background in IT. My team also has an academic background on machine learning algorithms and helping make things work in real life.

SM: Where is the machine learning knowledge in Finland? Is there a university that has a special machine learning focus?

MA: One of the best sources of that knowledge is what is now called the Alta University – there is an IT laboratory there. When I was studying there, it had the by name of “Neural Network Research Center,” with a decorated research ground for these types of solutions. We have a lot of people in IT who studied there, me included. Maybe I am a bit biased about it, but I would say this is the best school in Finland for these types of things.

SM: That is very interesting. Thank you for the story. I am always interested to see stories of sophisticated technologies that are somewhat unusual.

MA: I am very happy to be a part of Comptel, because the company always had an OSS/BSS background and a lot of knowledge on network elements, where we get a lot of information from. We have been able to merge that with predictive analytics solutions. I think we are able to offer something very interesting to our customers and we are seeing that by the response we are getting.

SM: It was very nice talking to you, Matti.

MA: It was a pleasure. Thank you.
