Thought Leaders in Internet of Things: Coby Sella, CEO of Sansa Security (Part 3)

Coby Sella: Alternatively, if the management company changes within a certain set of years, this mechanism will be applicable and replace the entity with another one. The solution itself has the flexibility to rely on these devices and to delegate the provisioning technology from one entity to the next one up the chain, which is a relatively innovative concept.

Sramana Mitra: What about on the facilities side? What specifically is happening? We just recently did a story on an energy sensor and energy management and optimization IoT company. I know that space is very active. What kind of adoption are you seeing there?

Coby Sella: One interesting adoption that we see is in the use case of connectivity chip sets. We’re in the process of working with a company that is developing communication-oriented SOCs that are actually the basis of turning a device into an IoT one. These guys have to have a system whereby they add some of the codes, but there are value-added players that add some of the code on a system that they’re trying to create. It’s extremely challenging for them to maintain the ecosystem of different value-added software providers in a manner that the end customer would probably buy a device implemented by this SOC but with additional companies. They are looking to figure out how to create a service that will create some order here and will be able to protect various pieces of codes that are configuring the device. You might think of it as relatively primitive application store that needs download, configure, and control pieces of software coming from different players. You can envision it as empowering more capabilities from the server side.

The PC, Android handsets, and even the iPhone became much more significant platforms once the user could configure them by downloading the applications. Eventually, the IoT domain, or some segments of it, will have to do the same. Specifically, we’re working together to create an ecosystem of that nature, which will be relatively simple and non-intrusive. It will be able to download pieces of codes and accelerate the adoption of additional feature sets and capabilities by allowing for the monetization of that based on our provisioning system.
