Thought Leaders in Internet of Things: Coby Sella, CEO of Sansa Security (Part 4)

Sramana Mitra: In that case, the software that you are delivering goes as embedded systems?

Coby Sella: Sansa’s solution actually requires implementation of clients. These clients will be embedded within the SOC. We are relying on the SOC’s platform security. This could be a piece of software in a secure environment. For the sake of fast adoption, we’re actually starting with software on existing devices. The counterpart of that would be a server entity that has two typical instances: either a vision machine that will exist within an existing server farm that many of our customers already have or alternatively via a server that Sansa is providing. These clients can talk to the servers and every client can talk to any server within this ecosystem. There’s no need for predefined connections between clients and servers.

I think what’s interesting about the way in which we implemented this mechanism is that it is very distributed and extremely low energy. We are allowing an entity that created the device to enable the delegation, or you can call it the leasing of this provisioning technique from the silicon guy to the guy that’s manufacturing the device. From there onwards, from entity A to entity C, that delegation allows the preservation of the right security mechanism when using provisioning. Because typically, without such delegation, the way in which you provision secrets deteriorates as you move up the chain towards the service provider.

In our use case, the level of security actually continues on. There’s two important technologies here. One is the technology of delegation. The second one is the technology of this trust, which means that given several entities sharing this mechanism and they all can delegate, there’s complete distrust between all of them such that none of these assets is exposed to another client injecting assets. That includes also the silicon vendor, who cannot see secrets and assets injected by other entities in the chain.
