You have heard me talk about a vision for Web 3.0 since 2007, when I first published my Web 3.0 = (4C + P + VS) equation. In this interview, we discuss how the systems behind the scene are coming along to make a full Web 3.0 user experience possible.
Sramana Mitra: Let’s start with some introduction about your company CoreMedia. Let’s introduce our audience to yourself as well as to the company.
Gerrit Kolb: CoreMedia has been in business for about 19 years. At the very beginning of the Internet, CoreMedia started to develop software that was related to the management of structured content. That was quickly picked up by most of the media and telco companies in Central Europe. CoreMedia became, I would say, the heart and soul and the backbone of most of the media sites operating in Central Europe. As I said, our roots are media and telco, which is typically where the leading edge requirement for content management as well as content delivery is coming from. Whatever is developed in the telco and media space trickles down into other areas as well.
Initially, all the rich media requirements were only relevant from companies. These days, there’s no corporate side anymore. All of this technology became the foundation of any Internet-driven business model or anything that either drives customers to you through the Internet or ships your goods through the Internet. That’s been our journey. Right now, just to give you a couple of numbers, over 60% of Central European German-speaking market is delivered through our system. That is all the major TV companies and all the major media companies. Pretty much, a lot of Fortune 100 companies.
Sramana Mitra: Are you based in Germany?
Gerrit Kolb: Our headquarters is in Hamburg. The majority of people initially came form the University of Hamburg. We have offices in San Francisco, Singapore, and London. Our customers are present in all continents.
Sramana Mitra: The roots of the company are in Germany. Did you start the company in Germany?
Gerrit Kolb: I personally did not start the company. I’ve been with the company for five and a half years now. The company was started with a group of data scientists and computer scientists from the University of Hamburg.
Sramana Mitra: It sounds like your system deals primarily with content management.
Gerrit Kolb: Yes. We are perceived as being one of the leaders in the high-end of content management.
