Tony Paine: What we are seeing now is there is a big push to Internet-enable these systems so that people can get visibility into what’s going on at multiple, remote sites and pull it into a central location and to be able to make intelligent decisions based on it. Kepware is starting to get pulled into this new space called the Internet of Things (IoT). I say it’s a new space. A lot of the stuff that we’ve been doing for the 20 years is exactly what’s required to build out an IoT solution. It’s the ability to go and recognize that there are multiple data sources that contain valuable information. However, the way that they expose that information may vary. It may vary in the actual communications medium. It could be wireless, Bluetooth, Ethernet, or a number of other things.
Sramana Mitra: First and foremost, I am actually completely aware of the fact that Internet of Things is not a new thing. It’s just that the adoption is at a faster rate now than we’ve seen in the past. There’s a lot of ability at this point in the history of technology to be able to collect the data generated by Internet of Things and do interesting analytical and automation stuff with that data. That’s what is making Internet of Things such a hot commodity.
The space that you’re describing, where you have played over the last 20 years, has had some degree of sensor-driven action for a long time, right?
Tony Paine: Yes. When I said that IoT isn’t new, what I really meant was that a lot of the concepts that need to be brought forward to realize the IoT aren’t necessarily new. However, those same concepts need to be applied at a much larger scale than we ever thought possible, and most importantly, across the public domain.
Sramana Mitra: The scale at which the industry is now adopting Internet of Things is something unprecedented. Can you talk about sub-sectors or application areas within the industrial automation space where you’re seeing more adoption or specific thought leadership?
Tony Paine: The utility space is definitely one such sub-sector.
