Brian Morin: Where we align with that trend is we leverage server-side DRAM so organizations can get more application performance. It’s not just a dedicated PCIE or dedicated SSD. Even within the server, that’s one layer below what we’re doing. We’re actually at the DRAM layer within the server. You can’t get any closer to the processor than using server-side DRAM. We do see that trend eventually evolving.

Sramana Mitra: What are some open problems in your space? If you were to start a company today, what would you be looking at?

Brian Morin: We’re a service to what organizations are trying to do. We’re a service to the bigger picture that they’re trying to accomplish. The bigger picture that everyone is trying to accomplish right now is they’re really seeking for actionable data. They’re in a position where they have data. In fact, organizations have more data now than they’ve ever have had before. Data that they wished and maybe not even thought that they could have five years ago, they have it at their fingertips now.

There’s a lot of work being done to process this data, warehouse it, and run analytics. We fit into that space because we are a service provider that allows them to get more IO performance on their existing infrastructure so they don’t have to buy expensive hardware infrastructure to do some of these growth initiatives that they need to do. However, the key problem is companies are having a hard time identifying the data that’s actionable. I really see a flat space in the market. It’s on the side of helping organizations identify and leverage actionable data for their business.

Sramana Mitra: Tell me a little bit about your company. You said you’re a 34-year-old company. Tell me a bit more about the history of the company.

Brian Morin: This is one thing that’s interesting about the company. It was started in the early 80s. Obviously, it started at a time when there was not a lot of VC money in the space. Barriers to entry were very low. The company was started by a single founder who wrote a program to solve a fragmentation issue for the Open DNS file system that existed prior to Windows. It was the only lightweight approach to solve fragmentation on systems. The company has its roots in a 100% software approach on system optimization. That’s in our DNA and in our heritage.
