Sramana Mitra: Let’s double-click down a bit. When you talk about email filtering management, email started becoming mainstream back in, let’s say, 1995. For 20 years, email filtering has been around. Can you talk about the evolution of where it was and where it is now, and why what you’re doing is significant?

Georges Lotigier: We think that email will remain the only independent and universal way for communicating. Some people say that email is dead because there is a lot of different ways of communication. However, the quantity of email is increasing and there is no substitute to email when you have to make transactions or for official communication in the business. So there is more and more email. That is the reality today and that probably will be the reality tomorrow. Because of that, it’s really difficult to manage the quantity of email. That is why we are unique. By providing Graymail Management solution that combines an auto classification of email stream with an automated unsubscribe feature without any compromise on security. Even with a poor security level on the SMTP protocol, we are able to secure our customers’ email environment against most advanced threats such targeted phishing or polymorph viruses.

So there have been two new things existing for a couple of years. It’s not possible to detect attacks only with signatures becuase, by the time you get the right signature, there is another form. It’s always moving and changing. That’s why Vade Retro is totally unique because we use the heuristic technology that analyse email’s content and form factor rather than only its signature. We see the difference when spam is sent or phishing is sent. It’s not made exactly with the same structure. We analyze each email one by one, which lets us see the difference because during a spam wave, spammers apply little modification to bypass filters, but we are able to identify different versions. We don’t see only one email and decide if it is right or wrong. We analyze all the flow of data in real-time with a big data approach to be predictive. This is the first point.

The second main point where Vade Retro is unique is that there is only one vendor that is able to classify non-priority email like ads and social network emails. Its not exactly security. It is about user experience, which is important to us. We are able to classify that with heuristics. This is one key position of Vade Retro because the quantity of emails is awful. It’s impossible to be efficient with the quantity of email you receive. Gmail understood that and classified the email quite correctly but all the competitors of Gmail and all the email vendors in the ecosystem are losing market share. We provide our technology for the ISP to compete with Gmail.
