Sramana Mitra: I think the data-driven approach is growing for sure. The follow-up question to that is, do you have direct competitors that are following exactly your approach?
Mark Jaffe: There are a lot of competitors who are applying machine learning to solve the data problem. I couldn’t even name them. Since this interview started, investors have probably put money into another one because it’s a hot space. The question is how do we compete in that market? The best way to explain that is to share what we see and what customers come to us for. We’re uniquely positioned to help larger organizations that are centrally collecting data. They want to build a center of excellence around a single behavioral analytics platform that they can use for user-based security, network security, server security, database security. They want to use it for operations. They may have tentacles into IoT. They may have business data.
We’re used by a number of organizations to track and identify anomalies in revenues in, or in orders per minute for large e-tailers. Our customers are more interested in leveraging good technology across the organization to optimize the value they get because they feel stung by the fact that they’ve been buying tools for years. Now, they’ve got too many and they don’t get the value from all of them. That tends to be a popular notion for our customers and we’re unique in being able to offer that. We’re the only behavioral analytics platform that enables cross-use case analysis on a broad set of use cases because we use a technique called unsupervised machine learning. Instead of our customers needing to have a really smart person to figure out how to write and modify existing supervised models, we have a very simple language that a systems administrator can use to, very quickly, run a new anomaly search.
We’re proud of the fact that a lot of our smaller customers download the product. Maybe, they use it with Splunk. We have an app for Splunk that’s really intuitive. From that, they tend to get value from the app on its own. Our first interaction with them is when they call to find out about licensing it.
