Thought Leaders in Internet of Things: Greenwave Systems CEO Martin Manniche (Part 2)

Sramana Mitra: What would be the most comfortable for us to understand what you do is if you step us through a customer use case.

Martin Manniche: I can go into a few customer use cases. One is how are we bringing value to a bigger telco? So an operator who is offering consumers home TV services or broadband services are what we call triple-player services. They have been doing triple-player services for a long period of time. What we are doing is we are making the network router in the home—what’s also called the customer premise equipment—and make that smart.

That means that if you’re looking at your phone and services coming to that device, normally when you have a traditional router, you get one release when you get the device. Maybe without your knowing it, there’s a service release going to that product. The only thing that this device does is enabling broadband, voice, and maybe being a connection broker to your TV system in the home. We are changing that.

Before I was CTO at Cisco Systems Consumer Business Group, I was at Linksys where we shipped a lot of retail routers in the past. What we saw there was a need to make those devices smarter and use the cloud as a platform for innovation. That’s precisely what we offer the telcos here. We are offering a cloud where they can do anti-virus in the cloud. We are protecting the home before that data goes into the home. We are protecting the whole home because it goes through the router and uses the cloud to protect.

We are also value parental control. We are bringing value as a guest network so people can join the network. You, maybe, don’t want that person to have access to your file systems. We are making a secure private network in your home. Of course, we are doing more than that. That is just additional services we can use in the cloud offer.

A lot of people now start talking about Z-Wave technology. Z-Wave is the leader in IoT right now in the consumer’s home. You can see Google is also working with Google Thread and Apple is working with Apple HomeKit. Google and Apple are not friends of the operators. They may work with them but the network believes that it’s their network and it’s their managed network.

What we do is we give these operators the hooks. The consumers do not need to make a decision between Z-Wave or Bluetooth-enabled. We have all these different protocols in the home. Whatever device people use, it brings it to the cloud so the operator can bring more and more services and give the consumer the flexibility on the managed network to choose whatever you want. That’s one example that is related to the traditional telcos.
