Martin Manniche: Another example is how we are using our platform for smart grid. We are using it for optimization on the power network in, what we call, the communications hub that takes data from the electrical meter and gas meter. In the past, you had readings everyday. Now you can have readings every hour. If you can have readings instantly, you can do that. This way, the consumer always understands his energy consumption. They can take actions based on their energy consumption.
We help the energy manufacturers to get readings on how the network is used up at the home. We also bring consumer value of giving visibility. On top of that, they can optimize their use pattern. Let’s go to a different example in the retail space. We offer the world’s first connected light bulbs that use IP foundation on an LED light bulb. What does that mean? That means that we put a little chipset into an LED light bulb. When people come to the home and there’s no activity, the lights shut off.
We can also turn the temperature of the color to the temperature that you want in the morning to generate a better ambience in your house. What you can also do is just consider the point of how many people who have not had that experience where you go to bed and wake up next morning and remember that you forgot to turn something off. We learn the use pattern in the home and based on that say, “After this amount of time, only use the outdoor lights on.”
To generate convenience and simplicity for the consumer, you have to be very careful in trying to be too disruptive or intrusive. You want to make sure that these technologies bring value and convenience, and don’t become annoying. That’s a tough balance. These are a few examples.
Sramana Mitra: Interesting. Now let’s go to the next question of open problems. What trends do you predict? Where do you see opportunities to create new companies for entrepreneurs?
Martin Manniche: As a serial entrepreneur, the key part is having an ability to not just understand the current market, but also understand the trends going forward and be always on the pace of change. As you become more and more successful, don’t get arrogant and just focus on being ready to adopt to change. The market is going through a tremendous change.
The problem we have been facing in the industry is that many guys are fighting over what should be the leading radio technology or protocol technology. That will continue because this market is so big. This will continue to change. Let me talk a little bit about the technology trends that I think your readers should take seriously.
The first point I will say is when you’re looking at the market today, there are a few thing that you should be aware of. Security on the network and the privacy of data is truly important. A lot of these small centres you have today are not that secure. You need to talk about not only physical security on the physical hardware but also the security when it goes to the network and splitting out this huge amount of data.
Also, be careful on how you link that data to a billing system. Make sure that the end-to-end security from the hardware to the commissioning, to activating the cloud, and data mining is focused to be highly secure. I think there will be a lot of opportunities for startups to look at security in all the elements of that value chain.
