Thought Leaders in Internet of Things: Frank Greer, CEO of Zipit Wireless (Part 2)

Sramana Mitra: Let’s go through some use cases. It sounds like you cater to different industry sectors. Take IoT use cases from three different sectors and let’s walk through them.

Frank Greer: A great example for a company that we helped is Bushnell. Bushnell is a well-known brand in the outdoor products category. They’re well-known for binoculars, trail cameras, and laser range finders. They had never developed a connected cloud. They never had to worry about interacting with the carrier, but they saw opportunity. They said, “If we can take our trail cameras and connect that, wirelessly, to a device and get a user’s images, that can be a huge benefit.”

If you’re a hunter and you have a property, and you want to keep track of how many deers are there, then these products are very popular for them. Any time you want to check the camera, you would have to drive out and pull out the SD card. You would have to drive out there. You may even have to hike. You’re taking time and there is also an expense to do that. You’re also putting a human presence in the presence of animals. You take that out and now apply the Internet of Things solution. The user can now be sitting anywhere. That is a much better customer experience.

They had the foresight to know that there was a better opportunity. They didn’t have the expertise and know-how to deliver that. We helped them find what was possible to do. They had envisioned a smartphone app using which users would have instant access anytime. We explained how that can be used. We explained how users can be alerted and notified if the camera was moved or if the battery was getting low.

That is a perfect example of these large sets of companies that now have to look at some new ways of doing business. That’s also a great example of the kind of companies that we can help. This was a partnership with AT&T. They provide the Internet and APIs. We did custom software design to make the web interface work a certain way. We also provided them a support portal for their support team to work with connected products. Today, we operate the cloud infrastructure for them.
