Thought Leaders in Internet of Things: Flavio Gomes, CEO of LogiSense (Part 4)

Sramana Mitra: We’ve discussed a lot of the use cases and scenarios on the horizon. Can you talk about what kinds of companies would you build if you were starting a company today? This is to give pointers to our entrepreneurs who are looking for problems to solve.

Flavio Gomes: That’s a great question. I think what you need to really consider when you’re looking at the IoT ecosystem is underserved markets. Think about the disruption that automation and intelligence will bring to certain types of industries. It’s happening relatively rapidly.

Because the underlying infrastructure and technology is readily available, you’re seeing new models and new applications happening every day. If you were to start a company now, I would start thinking about the analog devices that are used every day that are not being connected or are starting to see very early signs of connection. These are things like wearable clothing or biometric clothing that’s connected to a sensor.

Sramana Mitra: There’s a lot going on in the digital health area. Monitoring applications of Internet of Things as it pertains to digital health is huge right now.

Flavio Gomes: Absolutely. It’s a really big market. There are a couple of use cases that’s fascinating where sensors would tell you where a parking spot would be. It’s in place now. The challenge with that unfortunately is that parking lots will eventually disappear. You won’t need them anymore because if you have the promise in the theory that cars will be deployed as efficiently as possible and always on the road, what’s the point of having a parking lot.

Sramana Mitra: We’re quite far from that reality at this point. My sense is, we are, at least, a couple of decades away from that. There’re regulations involved here.

Flavio Gomes: There’s always going to be lobbyists that are going to want to protect their interests.

Sramana Mitra: Anything that is pure technology goes to market in a certain way at a certain pace. Anything that has regulatory issues attached to them have a very different journey into the adoption cycle.

Flavio Gomes: I agree. I’m a political expert, so I’m not sure how that’s going to play out. Let’s just use history as an example. You take a look at Uber. That was a pretty rapid disruptive force. You take a look at Airbnb.

Sramana Mitra: They were able to go under the radar. This one is not going to go under the radar.

Flavio Gomes: There’s likely very subtle ways that these things will happen.

Sramana Mitra: Great. Thank you for your time.
