Thought Leaders in Healthcare IT: Nancy Ham, CEO of WebPT (Part 2)

Nancy Ham: Our data shows pretty encouraging results of people staying in care longer, which means they have a better chance of getting their best health outcome. Now, let’s look at the ability to engage with future patients. Physical therapists are out and about in the community. They staff road races. They’re at the high school football game. They publish health and wellness information.

Now they have a chance to meet people and then bring them into this technology platform and communicate with them on an ongoing basis. If your family member needs physical therapy at some point, they’ll think, “I should definitely go to this therapy. These people have been sending me great information.”

It’s a really important product that attacks both that 90% of patients who don’t start physical therapy and improves that dropout rate. The other thing that I love about the product is it’s EMR-agnostic. You don’t have to use our EMR to use it.

There are some EMR companies who have philosophies where they want to bring you into their ecosystem and keep you there. To take advantage of anything they have, you have to use the EMR. I have a different philosophy. I love our EMR. I think it’s the best. A third of the industry has chosen it.

Our mission is to help all physical therapists. We help therapists achieve greatness in practice. That shouldn’t be limited if you use the EMR. I love having a product that the whole industry can use. That aligns well with our mission of serving our industry.

Sramana Mitra: So you’re doing EMR and you’re doing CRM? These are the two main blocks that you’re addressing in the physiotherapy practice.

Nancy Ham: Yes, but we have a few more. We also do practice management, i.e. scheduling and billing. We do revenue cycle management, helping you bill accurately and completely. We have a robust clinical outcome solution. We have an analytics solution. Now we’re working on referral relationship management.

The CRM is also patient-facing. We do have a patient mobile app and portal that is not only using the marketing automation to stay in touch with you but actually has about 45,000 video-based exercises so that you can continue your therapy at home and at your own pace.

I sometimes say, “Once upon a time, there was only EMR. Now we have 10 products and are adding more.”

Sramana Mitra: All these 10 products are revenue-generating? You charge separately for each of these 10 products?

Nancy Ham: We do. My philosophy is modular. I don’t want you to feel trapped. I want to bring you more and more tools to help you advance your business clinically and financially. They are all a la carte modules.
