Thought Leaders in Artificial Intelligence, Sanjoe Tom Jose, CEO of Talview (Part 3)

Sramana Mitra: When you start modeling some of your customer scenarios, what kind of metrics are you discovering?

Sanjoe Tom Jose: A key metric that we built around is time-to-hire. Time is critical. Just to give you an example, some of the organizations have hundreds of thousands of people on their payroll.

At any given point of time, they have around 5 to 10 they cannot bill in spite of having a contract with the customer. If that position is vacant for 30 days, even if you are able to bring it down by just 3 days, that’s a significant number across 5,000 employees.

In the same way, you look at an insurance organization. They have all these sellers on the field. It’s a high churn industry. You would see close to 40 to 50-person churn year after year. Because of the churn, you have 5 of your positions vacant for a month. That’s one month of missed sales.

Many of these players have 10,000 to 20,000 sellers. We are talking about thousands of vacant positions. Each seller would typically sell anywhere from $200,000 to $500,000 every quarter.

Sramana Mitra: Is there anything else that you’re learning from being in the market on where you’re seeing higher levels of adoption?

Sanjoe Tom Jose: There is a big focus on remote workforce. Most of these employers mostly hire from the same location. For example, in the call center industry in the US, the focus is on hiring work-from-home agents. There’s a lot of focus on that.

Because of increased salary cost in the big city, this is becoming a major trend. Tied to that, there is also a significant focus on how they can enable the gig economy.

One of the interesting aspects of gig economy is hiring people who are going to be with you only for six months. If you’re going to hire for six months, you’re not going to spend two months hiring that person. Time-to-hire becomes more critical for these organizations.

If I hired this person and took a break, and this person now wants to apply for another position, how can I use his past performance to hire him for a different role?

Sramana Mitra: Since you are very familiar with the HR tech space and AI applications within the space, where do you see open problems where there could be additional HR tech applications leveraging AI where you would encourage new entrepreneurs to start companies?

Sanjoe Tom Jose: Within the US, I have employees in five different locations. There are tools like Slack and Zoom which enable us to work seamlessly. There are motivation and performance management aspects that need to be addressed. It becomes very difficult for you to have the same kind of insight on that person.

There’s a significant need for tools that can exist on top of platforms like Slack and Zoom that leverage AI and that can give insight into how workers can be more productive and happy.

Sramana Mitra: Thank you for your time.
