Thought Leaders in Cyber Security: Cylynt CEO Ted Miracco (Part 5)

Sramana Mitra: Switching the line of questioning, is there a white space that you can point to? What can you talk about by way of opportunities?

Ted Miracco: I think the whole security field has a tremendous amount of white space. The model of having logins, passwords, and credentials is a tremendous white space. There is much fraud and there is so much going on out there in terms of people abusing credentials, especially in the SaaS world. That is a great opportunity.

I think malware is also a huge problem. Malware and piracy go hand in hand. To get malware on a computer, you need to have some hook and it’s usually too good like a free version of an expensive software. We see a tremendous amount of malware embedded in pirated copies of software.

The same thing applies to plugins, whether it’s a SaaS or on-premise application. The mobile world is full of them. The app stores don’t really offer that much protection from applications that are, if nothing else, misappropriating personal information. There is a tremendous amount of opportunity in security and in verifying that people are who they say they are.

I would recommend your listeners to look at that problem and look it at it carefully because it is not solved and the person who does solve it is going to have a tremendous opportunity. They can do a lot of good and reign in on people falsely using credentials.

Sramana Mitra: I would say that the identity management space is also very crowded. There are major players like Okta, Sign Identity, ShareID, and so on. It’s an active space, so if you are an entrepreneur looking for a problem to solve, you need domain knowledge in identity and a good understanding of the ecosystem that has already come together so that you can find a gap that you can go in.

Ted Miracco: I think Okta is a good example. They are very prominent. For entrepreneurs, you want to be in a space where there are well-financed companies that can acquire companies with unique technology. I think rapid exits are possible in that space if you have the right angle and solution.

Sramana Mitra: Thank you for your time.
