Thought Leaders in Internet of Things: Guillermo Diaz, CEO of Kloudspot (Part 6)

Sramana Mitra: Do you see the safety concerns being top of mind for the next decade or more?

Guillermo Diaz: I think it will be. It won’t be like it was last year. Safety is at the top of the mind for most customers that I talk to. There is a safety aspect to it. For us, because we have these capabilities, we just pivoted them or marketed them towards safety and health. We have the capability to do facial recognition, demographics, and gender and age detection.

We could do that earlier, and we continue to make that better. In one case, we were doing construction helmets, goggles, and gloves. All we did was switch it to masks. It’s just a different part of facial recognition.

Sramana Mitra: What were your use cases before COVID hit?

Guillermo Diaz: I already talked about a lot of them. The one I mentioned was in construction. We had worked with a huge construction company. They were looking at construction equipment detection.

Sramana Mitra: It was still a safety use case but in the construction context.

Guillermo Diaz: Correct. We did that and pivoted towards health and safety. We are not hearing it from construction people only, we heard from retail and schools. Before this call, we were talking to a large school in Silicon Valley. Their challenge is twofold. Number one, they have to bring the faculty back to work by July 6. I need to make sure that I have an environment that is safe and productive.

Their challenge in bringing these instructors back when they felt like they did well working remotely. They had questions about why they needed to go back to the office. The challenge is to bring the faculty back and make sure that they feel safe and productive. The second challenge is, by August or September, they need to get the student back safe. They need to make sure that all of the things that we talked about are at the scale of the large campus environment.

Sramana Mitra: You are describing quite diverse use cases. Does that mean that you are operating at multiple layers? You have a platform layer that has all of your technical capabilities and then you have to do a certain amount of customization for these different vertical use cases?

Guillermo Diaz: Not really. For this case, you would almost have a two for one. I do have to bring people back to work, so I will need things like the social distancing and other things that we talked about. There may be small tweaks. We might have a retail customer that wants to know much more about mood detection. They might have another use case that we would add to the demographics of a person.

Whether I am in the city of Erie, Pennsylvania, or in Monterrey, Mexico, I have similar capabilities that I do if I am in the offices of Pepco, because I am getting access to the network and I am looking for the same patterns and experiences. It doesn’t matter where I am. I could be in some office or these large universities. That is the beauty of the platform.

Sramana Mitra: The bulk of your technology is universally and horizontally applicable. There might be small amounts of custom stuff, but it’s mostly horizontal. Thank you for your time.
