Sramana Mitra: But you would still have to sell the full product – hardware and software – if a carrier wants to work with you.

John Wu: It depends on the carrier. Some carriers have their hardware vendors picked out. They want to use their hardware vendors. We can port the software onto this hardware. Other carriers don’t mind just getting any solution. We could offer them the full solution.

Sramana Mitra: Possibly, the ideal place for you to place your software would be on the carrier’s hardware. The modem that Xfinity gives us is a must. We have to have that. On top of that, we can add an Eero router to get the whole house connected.

If you can eliminate an additional router requirement and you can just layer the software onto Xfinity’s router and enhance that, that would be very helpful. Any time equipment fails in a consumer household, it’s many hours of tech support. It’s a very unhappy situation.

John Wu: Right. With our app, we have a logging feature. They can ask the customers to get a log of the network and remotely solve some of these issues. There are some features that could be beneficial outside of the network protection for the carriers to have as well.

Sramana Mitra: Talk to me about the competitive landscape. How much of this market is happening right now? How many players are there besides yourselves? How many secure routers are out there?

John Wu: There are competitors like the ones you mentioned – Eero and all the different WiFi providers. We are uniquely positioned. Our focus is primarily on network protection and privacy. The software is pretty much designed from the ground up. We’ve been developing this over the last six years to offer you the best type of protection on your network and also the best privacy on your network.

For example, we intentionally designed it so that all the processing is on the router itself. Your browsing history is all stored on the router. It’s not stored on our server. When you pull that information to your app, it’s fully encrypted end-to-end. We don’t see any of that data. It’s encrypted. We know that privacy is important to our customers.

When we talk about introducing all these devices into your home, we’re getting agency into all these devices like your smart TV or thermostat. Knowing how a company is using that data or how the company is protecting that data is really important. We intentionally designed it so that it focuses on prioritizing and protecting that data.

Sramana Mitra: The problem of these hyperconnected homes is just going to keep growing. We’re not protected at all at the moment.

John Wu: For a lot of these devices, security is not high on the list. Part of the reason why maybe some of the companies are introducing these devices is to collect data so they can resell to advertisers and use that data. That’s not our intent. Our intent is to maintain your privacy and help protect your network.
