Smart City Use Cases and Opportunities: Jay Chandan, CEO of Gorilla Technology (Part 6)

Sramana Mitra: In general, the issue of internet of things and all kinds of monitoring is that there is a lot of data being generated. That data does need to be protected in a holistic and wholesome way. Your point is well taken that that problem needs to be thought about more accurately and more precisely.

Jay Chandan: It’s a long-term issue. We are working very closely with a lot of the government agencies to address them.

Sramana Mitra: Anything else? Any other problem that you want to discuss?

Jay Chandan: In terms of AI and IoT, there are problems for which customers come to me. There are not many players who can build System on Chips (SOCs). We decided to build our own practice. The biggest SOC players today are coming from China. There’s a reluctance for customers to hand over their entire SOC to some of the Chinese software and hardware manufacturers. They’ve reached out to us to build SOCs. If I can find somebody who can help me through that, that will be helpful as well.

Sramana Mitra: For entrepreneurs who are listening to you or reading your story, what I like about your model is the solution provider model where you can insert a lot of innovative solutions as they come along. There will be a lot of new stuff that’s going to come along. We are in a hyperdrive of innovation at the moment with AI penetrating everything.

I was talking to a friend of mine who works as part of the Sand Hill Angel group here. Last month, he reviewed 22 deals. 19 were AI deals. All existing workflows are getting an AI infusion, generative AI in many cases.

I remember there was a time when everybody came and pitched, “I’m the Uber of this and the Uber of that.” Now it’s the Chat GPT of this and Chat GPT of that. Technology goes through these phases where a certain model comes to the forefront and there’s a revamping that goes on.

I remember in 2007 when the iPhone came out. Everybody was doing apps. All workflows started having a mobile app component to it. We are in a very large-scale AI-driven revamp cycle. It’s good that people know that they can come to you and potentially get integrated into your solutions.

Jay Chandan: I mentioned we’re completely platform agnostic. Our AI solutions spread across all hardware including Intel, ARM, Nvidia, and Windows servers. We are investing heavily in Windows IoT as well. As and when there are new products that come through and develop, we are happy to work with them at any time. At the end of the day, there’s not one single solution provider for a smart city. The space is huge. I don’t know if you’ve seen the data.

Sramana Mitra: It’s an ecosystem.

Jay Chandan: Yes. If you look at the advancement, it’s absolutely mind-boggling. When I see that kind of growth, I believe there is enough room for a number of players.
Sramana Mitra: Absolutely. Thank you for your time.
