Thought Leaders in Cloud Computing: Tidemark CEO Christian Gheorghe (Part 7)

Sramana Mitra: Again, I’m going to ask you to lift yourself out of Tidemark and take a blank sheet of paper in your head. You are a serial entrepreneur and you have started many companies. You have a good understanding of how to look at your industry and find right spaces or gaps in the market. What are some of these gaps that you have identified where you would point entrepreneurs to look into now? I often see opportunities and I am a serial entrepreneur as well. I can see opportunities that other people could work on. What are some of the other opportunities that are on your radar?

Christian Gheorghe: I think that’s an interesting question. It’s been a long time since I thought about anything other than building this company. You are right. We do live in fast times and I’m very fascinated by the technology disruption and innovation that cloud provides, at least in intersecting cloud with social data and mobile. I think those are the two areas that I would point to.

There are a lot of core enterprise processes that can benefit from Dropbox and what others have done at the customer side. Someone who has been in the enterprise space as an entrepreneur or otherwise is interested in re-imagining these processes. That would be one area.

I don’t know too much about the consumer space. I love it when it pops in and gets people excited. It’s also another area that’s very interesting. What are the types of applications? What are the type of experiences that one can imagine once things like Bitcoin or Uber come into play? What does that do to the overall personal clouds? In other words, are we moving from a cloud-to-cloud world to a personal-to-personal cloud type? What does it do to a well-established collection of applications that we are so used to in terms of writing emails, collaborating, or picking up a taxi? I would point people to the very wide space of us, as people, becoming the nodes of this great collection of grids that the personal cloud is enabling.

Sramana Mitra: Let me add to what you said and throw out a few ideas here. I think the nature of work is changing to the extent that individuals are going towards this personal cloud model. The individuals are becoming individual entrepreneurial entities. Today, there is this notion of the corporation with many employees who’ll follow a certain policy and certain method. What happens if that changes substantially and individuals do not exist within the structure of a corporation and become freelance entities?

Christian Gheorghe: That’s correct. It’s the nature of work. It’s the way we think about an interaction becoming more peer-based rather than company-based. If that’s the case, what does the heuristic-based analytical cloud look like where you are basically becoming the node? Of course, you have the robotics from that side where more of the filtering to the cloud is machine-to-machine. If you want to go even further than that, how do you discern between a node that’s a person and a node that’s a machine?

Sramana Mitra: Okay, is there anything else you want to talk about, Christian?

Christian Gheorghe: I think I have exhausted all exciting things to say. I certainly appreciate your kind style and questions in the interview.
