Thought Leaders in Cloud Computing: Jeetu Patel, GM of EMC Syncplicity (Part 4)

Sramana Mitra: Fair enough. We have talked about security, privacy, and hybrid cloud. Where do you see things going from here in terms of the open problems? Given those other trends and that there are multiple devices in the enterprise floating around, what are the open problems currently on your radar?

Jeetu Patel: The first open problem on the radar is the fact that software is going to get more predictive with a fair number of insights. Software will know what you want to do before you actually want to do it. I’ll give you a couple of examples. There’s a fair amount of productivity enhancements that happen by solving some of the small frustrating problems that we actually spend a lot of time on a daily basis. I sit down in a meeting with 15 people. We white board some concepts. At the end of the meeting, I take a picture through my phone. Then people ask, “Can you send me that picture as well?” Now, I have to remember all the people and their email addresses to send them that picture. It is something very basic but happens on a regular basis.

Syncplicity will automatically know that you actually happen to be in a meeting or that the meeting has just ended. Syncplicity also knows the email addresses of the 15 people in the meeting. It takes away the busy work from people and helps them focus on what they do best.

Sramana Mitra: What is Syncplicity? Is it an application?

Jeetu Patel: Syncplicity is an application for any device that you use – Mac, PC, iPad, iPhone, or Android. You can install Syncplicity and have all of your files on that app. If you have files, pictures, or anything you want to do to collaborate more effectively, Syncplicity will allow you to do that in a seamless way in and outside the organization.

Sramana Mitra: Syncplicity basically communicates with your calendar and knows what meeting you’re in – who are the people in that meeting, files that you’re uploading based on meeting notes? It has the capability to draw those conclusions?

Jeetu Patel: At a very simple level, Syncplicity is like Dropbox for the enterprise but far more user friendly and secure.

Sramana Mitra: Dropbox cannot do what you just described.

Jeetu Patel: Exactly. The whole premise of Dropbox was, “I can have all my files in all my devices.” Syncplicity can do that and other things as well. Now, I can use my mobile device to edit documents. I can use my mobile device to capture what’s going on around me and share it with people. I can use my mobile device to record a meeting’s content and share that recording with the people that are in the meeting. It’s a fundamental breakthrough innovation for business users to make them more productive while not compromising on security.

Sramana Mitra: Given that comparison, let me ask you about your top competitors. Who do you see in deals when you’re trying to sell Syncplicity to enterprises?

Jeetu Patel: We think that this multi-billion dollar market is going to be a four-horse race. Right now, there are about 40 vendors in the space but there are four that are of meaningful substance. I’ll just put ourselves as the first one in this four-horse race. EMC is playing a very meaningful role in this space. We are the fastest growing file sync and share vendor in the industry. We grew orders of magnitude more than any of our competitors.
