Thought Leaders in Cloud Computing: Assaf Rappaport, CEO of Adallom (Part 1)

Cloud adoption in the enterprise is opening up new security gaps. Assaf and his team have identified a major one and convinced Sequoia to concept-finance the venture. Very interesting articulation of cloud security issues facing enterprises!

Sramana Mitra: Let’s start with introducing our audience to yourself as well as Adallom. What are you doing? What specifically are the trends that you’re aligning with within the cloud computing space?

Assaf Rappaport: Thank you for having me and Adallom. I have two different backgrounds that relate to the work that I do. The first one is where I grew up, which is in 8200 unit of the Israeli Defense Force. I worked there for more than 10 years. This is where I got all my cyber security skills working with different intelligence agencies around the world. The other aspect is academic. I’m a graduate of Computer Science from Hebrew University and did my masters from Technion-Machon.

I work in the cloud area and I’m a CDN [Content Distribution Network] expert. This is my background before I founded Adallom almost two years ago. Adallom solves the biggest gap that security teams face today. How do you protect your data when you have no visibility and control? This is the biggest gap that organizations face. This is where Adallom is working.

Sramana Mitra: The audience that we have is a very sophisticated, highly technical audience. If you look at our website, we do pretty dense content. I’m also a computer scientist from MIT so you can get fairly technical. What I’d like to do is take one or two of your clients and have a slightly more technical use case-oriented discussion of specifically how you’re addressing the issue.

Assaf Rappaport: I’ll start with the issue. Organizational security is based on three different pillars. It includes the end point security, which accesses your applications through the network, network security, and application security. But if you’re moving to Salesforce, Box, or Workday, the organization is actually losing these three pillars of security. How can you protect then?
