Thought Leaders in Cloud Computing: Secure-24 Co-CTOs, Scott McIsaac and Sean Donaldson (Part 1)

Today, we’ll look at private cloud hosting as a domain to double-click on. Scott and Sean, with Secure-24, are competing with the likes of IBM.

Sramana Mitra: Welcome to Thought Leaders in Cloud Computing. If you would first introduce yourself as well as the company to give us some context, that’ll be great.

Sean Donaldson: I’m Co-CTO at Secure-24 with Scott McIsaac. I have 15 years of mostly infrastructure experience, effectively building cloud infrastructure and cloud solutions for numerous clients.

Scott McIsaac: I have a similar background. I’ve been with this company for about 10 years. I have a very strong background in infrastructure, specifically around building large-scale cloud.

Sramana Mitra: Tell us a bit about what the company does.

Scott McIsaac: Secure-24 is a managed service provider that plays more in the application space than Infrastructure-as-a-Service. We focus heavily around large-scale ERP applications such as PeopleSoft, Hyperion, and SAP. Helping businesses run their applications from a bases level down is part of our business.

The other part is in the large-scale IT outsourcing. We come to a customer and provide a discovery of understanding about what their environment is, or a plan to migrate them from their existing possibly legacy infrastructure and move them into our facility. We manage the full stack. At the minimum, we do OS but most of the time we play into the application space.

Sean Donaldson: Our biggest differentiator from the whole notion of a cloud hosting provider is we like to look at the idea of enterprise private cloud. Very much like what Scott was articulating, it’s focused on hosting the most business-critical applications – ERP systems, supply chain management, financials, and healthcare. It goes across a number of different industries. What differentiates us is the ability to be able to provide a cloud-type solution and breaking down cloud with the ability to add and subtract compute and storage resources at a relatively simple basis, but being able to do that in a highly compliant and highly secure environment.

Generally, with large enterprise that we’ve talked to, this is where we see a lot of industries making this transition to managed service cloud environment. The idea behind that is that you can’t go to a traditional cloud provider because they don’t meet the requirements in compliance, security, and disaster recovery for your most business-critical applications. That’s where we really shine. We excel in areas where it’s really a white-glove service, specialized around JD Edwards running your most critical ERP. That’s where we fit between hosting in your data center and going out to a public cloud.

Scott McIsaac: One of the things that we like to look at is we help the customer focus on what they do best, which is running their business. They don’t have to worry about running infrastructure and running applications. They worry about their business, which helps them quite a bit.
