Bootstrapping Using Services: Taylor Tyng, CEO of Wiredrive (Part 5)

Posted on Saturday, Sep 17th 2016

Taylor Tyng: By focusing on the organization and how teams collaborated, we could assist with making sure the intellectual knowledge was captured and shared. What we saw in our competing niches were people who were trying to solve more individualized and lighter weight problems. Another major inflection point for us was how cloud has been developing in a way where the economies of scale are also matching some of the needs for security. Security has always been a major focus for us because our customers are movie studios, television networks, and brands like Beats by Dre, Nike, and Red Bull.

96% of Super Bowl commercials go through our system and virtually, every major motion picture and advertising promotion goes through Wiredrive. You, pretty much, can’t turn on the television without actually seeing something that hasn’t been collaborated on in our system. Because of that, security has been a incredibly important for us and we implement at a high level across all stages.

Choices such s focusing on security were business-driven rather than technology-driven. When it came to our customers in security, they were focusing on the technology side of security rather than the educational side of it. Many times, the largest security risks are people. It became a real rallying cry for not only having security around our products, but how we have it around our business. I think that has been a real value creator for us in the way we approach enterprise customers.

Sramana Mitra: Where are you today?

Taylor Tyng: We are in a really fun part of our history. We are at a place where, after many years of bootstrapping our work, we’ve reached a certain critical mass where we’re now in the process of scaling. We’re at the next steps of providing scales resources by exploring options from investments all the way to migrating particular technology stacks to allowing ourselves to be more flexible and cost efficient. We are at a place where we are the leader in cloud media sharing and collaboration for the creative professional industry and plan to continue making huge advancements to stay the leader.

We’re continuing to be that deeply embedded technology that focuses on moving large complex videos –  videos from broadcast to VR. We’re starting to see how some of the emergent video formats are going to play into content creation. It’s fun because we’re getting to be integrated deeply in both the authoring world of these tools to some of the more prototypical business tools. We are merging the business and creative workflows together to come up with the creative choices that allow people to do what they need to do.

Sramana Mitra: Where are you revenue-wise?

Taylor Tyng: We’re going to be south of $10 million this year.
