Thought Leaders in Cloud Computing: Nuxeo CEO Eric Barroca (Part 3)

Sramana Mitra: What I find interesting in what you said is when you have data structure granularly organized like this, this is a very good beginning for machine learning and other kinds of data-driven rules or data-driven actions. Where are you in those terms? Is that something that’s part of your system? Is this something in your product roadmap?

Eric Barroca: We are starting to play with those. It’s the first step. When you have those structures in place, then you can do analysis and machine learning. If you don’t have them, you can’t. Unify your data model so that you can evolve in a graceful way. Then you can plug in analytics tools. You can use machine learning and try to anticipate, in a knowledge base, what you will need. To do that, you need the data because when you don’t have the data, you can’t apply it.

Sramana Mitra: Right now, the way you’re using this data structure is more manual. You’re creating rules engines that go on top of this data and create simpler heuristics. In the long run in your product roadmap, you will get to more complex AI in due course.

Eric Barroca: Of course. It’s a lot of trial and error. We will take a couple of years before we can develop. Once you have this data modeling done, the next step is machine learning.

Sramana Mitra: The other thing that you could do, and this segues into my last segment of questioning, is you could open this up with API’s to entrepreneurs who have specific domain knowledge about specific industry sectors and can create good learning models and AI models that can go on top of your data structure. That’s another way you can build this company further leveraging more of the ecosystem as well.

Eric Barroca: That’s right. We are usually handling very sensitive data. We are touching the core assets of the company. Any feature is API first and is completely open for integration – advanced data model, API integration and then analytics integration.

Sramana Mitra: What are the industry sectors where you have customers?

Eric Barroca: We are very horizontal. We have a lot of customers in the media and entertainment industry. We are heavy on visual assets.

Sramana Mitra: It sounds like one of the ways that entrepreneurs could be inspired by your interview is to look into how they might be able to take your API and expand with domain-specific intelligence in some of the sectors where you are playing.

Eric Barroca: We have many partners who are building applications on top of the platform either by using the platform as a base for building vertical apps or contributing plugins for extending things and creating new features. We have 20 smaller corporations using our platform as a base for products.

Sramana Mitra: Excellent. Thank you for your time.
